about

I consider this music as my long lost shakuhachi meditation album. Originally recorded and released in 2009 under the name "Zen Spa" This album is a collaboration between myself and musician/composer Daniel May. Recorded at Maywood Studio in Pittsburgh PA.
Multi-instrumentalist and composer Stephen Sciulli has established himself as a risk taker for many decades.
Stephen is based in the upper reaches of Allegheny County Pennsylvania in a very small rural farming and fracking community. His musical history is long and varied. Starting in the late 1970’s with the seminal Pittsburgh progressive rock band Carsickness. He then founded the Irish rock group Ploughman’s Lunch. Later Stephen formed the sound healing/meditation duo Life In Balance.

For over 14 years Stephen toured the country with Life In Balance, producing numerous sound meditation CDs featuring electronically-processed Japanese Shakuhachi. Throughout his musical career, Stephen has maintained a deep tradition of intentionally expanding the listener-focused experience by creating trances and hypnotic states with lush sound environments. Releases are available on Amazon, iTunes, Spotify, Pandora, etc.

Currently, Stephen is exploring a new form of bio-communicative music: a collaboration with living plants as they respond to the flow of information and changes in their environment.

As a Botanical Musician - I will play the Japanese Zen Flute (Shakuhachi) to accompany the real-time musical expressions of living plants. The unique, intricate, multi-level textures and ambient flows of music are a direct result of our co-created bio-communication.

Triggering electronic musical instruments using the natural and subtle electrical signals that are continuously emitted from plant life, I will build musical foundations with a self generative musical environment which will ebb and flow in response to the ontological values between plant, performer and other environmental factors (eg time of day, geographic location those who are present, etc.).

The live bio-acoustic performance is highly entertaining visually and relaxing and musical.
“…Stephen has created one of the more unusual and creative records that will come out of Pittsburgh this year”. —Scott Mervis. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. 6/17

“Stephen Sciulli is one of the area’s most versatile musicians, he defies categorization.” —Rege Behe, Pittsburgh Tribune. 7/17

“Haunting, hypnotic, funny. MAGNIFICENT." —Jim Dauterive, the mastermind behind King of the Hill and Bob's Burgers

“Your music added to a new Pittsburgh.”-
—Bill Peduto, Pittsburgh Mayor

“Is it too early to proclaim this the album of the year? With this album Stephen advances folk music to, as we say in Pittsburgh, "a whole nother level." There's not a single immemorable melody or misplaced note throughout these 11 songs. “Amazon review

“...Sciulli's approach has put him at the vanguard of the regional scene. The consistent theme that shows up in his is radical innovation.” Pittsburgh City Paper
